Title: Within and Beyond: Lessons in Computational Sustainability

Abstract: Within the realm of computational sustainability, my research over the past twelve years has leveraged AI and sensing technologies to address critical environmental and health challenges. This keynote will explore key projects and innovations in wearable healthcare, air quality monitoring, and energy efficiency, showcasing how AI and sensing can drive impactful solutions. Beyond these technical achievements, I will share valuable lessons learned during my journey, providing insights into overcoming the hurdles and seizing the opportunities in research. Through these reflections, I aim to offer guidance and inspiration to current and aspiring doctoral students, emphasizing the importance of perseverance, collaboration, and creative problem-solving in advancing sustainable development.

Bio: Dr Nipun Batra is an Assistant Professor in Computer Science at IIT Gandhinagar. He previously completed his postdoc from University of Virginia. He completed his PhD. from IIIT Delhi where he was a TCS PhD fellow. His group called the Sustainability Lab broadly works on machine learning and sensing for computational sustainability problems like smart buildings, air quality and wearable healthcare. His work has been awarded several awards, including, young alumni award from IIIT Delhi, the best PhD presentation at ACM Sensys, best demo at ACM Buildsys, and a best video nominee at ACM KDD.
