COMPASSVisa requirements
From the South African Department of Home Affairs: Visitors’ visas are for international travellers (citizens of other countries) who have permanent residence outside South Africa and wish to visit the country temporarily for tourism or business purposes of 90 days or less.
If you reside in the following countries, you are exempt from applying for a visa.
Visa requirements for East African Countries and Visa requirements for Western Africa Countries.
If your country is not on the list of exempt countries, you will need to apply for a visa to enter South Africa. The South African online eVisa service allows the processing an eVisa application with the South African Department of Home. Alternatively, you may use VFS Global.
Requesting an Invitation Letter
The South African Department of Home Affairs will require a letter from the conference organizers, including a copy of a certified copy of the ID book or passport.
Visa letters can be requested as part of the conference registration process. Download links will be visible on the automated Registration Confirmation email received once completing the online registration process.
Payment is not required in order to get the letter.

Requesting a Visa Support Letter
You can also request a support letter from the Association for Computing Machinery. ACM does not issue formal invitation letters for visas to attend ACM sponsored conferences. However, if a visa support letter will aid with your application you can also request one from ACM.
- ACM is able to provide visa support letters to attendees as well as authors with accepted papers, posters, or members of the conference committee.
- For visa support letters, refer all requests to supportletters@acm.org. Please allow up to 10 business days to receive a letter. All requests are handled in the order they are received. The information below should be included with the request:
- Your name as it appears on your passport
- Your current postal mailing address
- The name of the conference you are registering for
- Your registration confirmation number
- If you have any papers accepted for the conference, please provide the title and indicate whether you are the “sole author” or a “co-author”
- Authors may indicate their paper title. If no paper, speakers can provide the title of their presentation.
ACM does not provide letters for transport of vendor or presenter equipment. ACM suggests shipping the materials insured to the conference facility.
